Use the right amount of detergent. More soap does not mean cleaner clothes, it often causes excess suds, residue, and odors. For most loads, use a small measured amount and increase only for very large or heavily soiled loads. If you are using high-efficiency detergent, use even less and always follow the label directions. 

 Separate laundry by color and fabric. Wash whites and light colors together, and dark colors separately to prevent dye transfer. Keep towels and heavy items separate from lightweight clothing so everything washes evenly. Delicates should be washed on a gentle cycle and placed in a mesh bag when possible to reduce wear. 

 Load machines properly and choose the right cycle. Do not overload the washer, clothes need room to move for a complete clean and proper rinse. Spread items evenly in the drum to reduce vibration and improve performance. Use cold water for most everyday loads, warm water for towels and sheets, and hot water only when needed and safe for the fabric. 

Keep clothes smelling fresh. Start your wash as soon as possible and avoid leaving wet laundry sitting in a basket. For odor-prone items like gym clothes, consider an extra rinse and use a detergent designed for activewear. Dry items fully and remove them promptly to prevent musty smells.
